Why is exercise so effective for pain management?

Exercise can help with management of both acute pain (short term) and chronic pain (6 months or longer) in a variety of different ways.

Exercise can be used both for strengthening the body but also retraining the brain and nervous system to better respond to pain so that it isn't as much of a burden.
When our musculoskeletal system is strengthened our functional capacity is greater and our movement system is more efficient. This allows the musculoskeletal system to tolerate more load and in turn prevent or rehabilitate injury or anatomical disorders.

Exercise can also reduce the intensity of pain in the short term, this phenomenon takes place after the neuro-chemical release of dopamine and serotonin occurs as well as neural inhibition, which has been shown to significantly reduce the intensity of pain.

Using the right exercise, research shows that movement and physical activity can be used as a method of retraining the brain and nervous system to respond differently to certain movements or postures in a way that reduces the intensity and burden of pain, so it has less control over you.

Accredited Exercise Physiologists are best healthcare professionals to speak to if you're considering using exercise as method to better manage and rehabilitate chronic or acute pain.
